A labour of love and devotion, no doubt about it. The photos are worth the cover charge alone. After reading this book you will feel you know Walter and John McLaughlin, the man and his music. I don't always agree with Walter's opinions but I totally agree with his intent. Excellent.

My daughter's H.S. final for Music class was to write a comparison of the lyrics of two contrasting songs. My daughter chose (with my help) STRANGE FRUIT and BLACK MAN (Stevie Wonder). Needless to say, she got an "A"! I once sat a bunch of teens down (relatives), played Billy's STRANGE FRUIT and asked them to explain it to me line by line. This turned into a GREAT history lesson for all of them. Born & raised in the North, the first time I visited Virginia I ventured on a "Plantation Tour". While on the upper porch of a slavemaster's house (I was the only black person on the tour), I asked the tourguide "WHAT IS THAT SWEET SMELL", I had never smelled a tree so sweet. She answered MAGNOLIA and turned away embarrased it seemed. Then BILLY HOLIDAY's voice immediately began to haunt me and it seemed as if I were transported back in time and I could see bodies hanging from that gigantic, sweet Magnolia tree in front of me. In moments, I was in tears... Time DOES NOT heal all wounds.
